Mass Modeling of Disk Galaxies: Constraints and Adiabatic Contraction

چکیده
We present a comprehensive mass modeling technique for disk galaxies with resolved rotation curves. Our models allow for a stellar disk of variable thickness and mass-to-light ratio, a gaseous disk, halo profiles with a range of inner density profile slopes (−α), oblate halos, adiabatic contraction of the halo, and fixed minimum rotation curve error values. We test our technique with data from the literature consisting of high quality HI and Hα rotation curves for galaxies with available photometry. These galaxies consist of dwarf, low surface brightness (LSB), and high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies. We apply constraints on the disk, and halo parameters in an attempt to break the degeneracies that exist between the disk and halo, and between the halo parameters themselves. Mass Modeling of Disk Galaxies: Degeneracies, Constraints and Adiabatic Contraction
This paper addresses available constraints on mass models fitted to rotation curves. Mass models of disk galaxies have well-known degeneracies, that prevent a unique mass decomposition. The most notable is due to the unknown value of the stellar mass-to-light ratio (the disk-halo degeneracy); even with this known, degeneracies between the halo parameters themselves may prevent an unambiguous de...
متن کاملA Revised Model for the Formation of Disk Galaxies: Low Spin and Dark-halo Expansion
We use observed rotation velocity-luminosity (VL) and size-luminosity (RL) relations to single out a specific scenario for disk galaxy formation in the ΛCDM cosmology. Our model involves four independent log-normal random variables: dark-halo concentration c, disk spin λgal, disk mass fraction mgal, and stellar mass-to-light ratio ΥI . A simultaneous match of the VL and RL zero points with adia...
متن کاملA Revised Model for the Formation of Disk Galaxies: Quiet History, Low Spin, and Dark-halo Expansion
A specific scenario of disk galaxy formation is singled out by the observed joint distribution of structural parameters: rotation velocity V , disk size R, and luminosity L. In particular we focus on the Tully-Fisher (VL) and size-luminosity (RL) relations. Within the ΛCDM cosmology, we employ a simple model involving four independent log-normal random variables: dark-halo concentration c, disk...

We present a simple technique to estimate mass-to-light (M/L) ratios of stellar populations based on two broadband photometry measurements, i.e. a color-M/L relation. We apply the color-M/L relation to galaxy rotation curves, using a large set of galaxies that span a great range in Hubble type, luminosity and scale size and that have accurately measured HI and/or Hα rotation curves. Using the c...

We combine our recent measurements of the velocity dispersion and the surface brightness profile of the lens galaxy D in the system MG2016+112 (z = 1.004) with constraints from gravitational lensing to study its internal mass distribution. We find that: i) dark matter accounts for >50% of the total mass within the Einstein radius (99% CL), whereas ∼75% is the more likely contribution. In partic...
